Last summer, I stayed in Tokyo for bridal bouquet workshop and freelance event producing works. One of the places I love so much in Tokyo is definitely this flower market. Generally speaking, Tokyo has a lot, A LOT of flower shops throughout the city, and honestly, I think they are all beautiful with carefully selected blooms that go nicely with their atmosphere. So even if I don't get to go to the market, I get to play with the local flowers without fuss. But I love all the energy flying around in the air at the early morning market, and you always get the freshest flowers there.

At the market, most of the flowers are harvested locally- yes, that means you get those delicate looking butterfly ranunculus in every color, ruffled pansies, oh, and those cute looking bumble bee like ranunculus.

I get a lot of inquiries about Tokyo flower market. So I think I’m going to mention what I do to be clear for everyone who’s wondering. I do floral workshops in Tokyo in about every 3 months, the workshop is held in English, Japanese and Korean, so if you speak any of those, you are welcome! I also teach 1 on 1 private classes, so even if you can’t make it to the workshop, you can ask me for private lessons with small group. Also I do floral and event producing freelance work in throughout Japan. For floral works, I work with other florists or event planners from both Japan and other countries. Sometimes florists or event planners who are not based in Japan have hard time sourcing the fresh flowers, because you need a license- to each market- to purchase flowers, and also you need to speak the language to communicate with the vendors. So as a floral liaison, I would make the arrangements before they arrive in Japan, and also I participate the creating part as a florist.

I am planning to go back to Japan in May for a workshop, so lots to plan! Hope to see you there. Wherever you are.

class journal 31 | One on One with Iris from HongKong

July 3, 2017 Hye

Meeting a new fellow flower enthusiast is exciting, especially when they come from another culture! Luckily I get to have a lot of happy encounters through floral classes and workshops. On a beautiful day of April, Iris came along. Just like any other hellos in life, we started our conversation with our interests, in our case, flowers and cats. Funny how a life surrounded by cats inspires me in many ways, and I am very glad I can share the inspirations with other people.

Ahh-. Spring flowers and foliages. Although it feels almost impossible to find a place to forage in the cities like Seoul or HongKong, there are always ways. In my case, I have a little garden (if I may call it that) in front of my apartment that no one cares about and I've been growing flowers there.
Over the years, lilacs, hellebores, hydrangea and rose bushes have grown and in Spring they blossom and it is a pure joy to cut them and put them in the arrangements. For the bouquet Iris and I made for our one on one, we went out and urban-foraged some blue berry branches, cherry blossoms, hellebores (really dark, velvety, gorgeous kind), and some heuchera leaves: my all time favorite things to grow in the garden.

Our lunch! We sometimes order food (or even visit) from Appia, the restaurant across the street from our studio (they have the best onion rings and Uni crostini) but most times, if I have enough energy, I cook for our special class times. I made my specialty lasagna and caesar salad for lunch, we ate it during our break between a huge bouquet and basket arrangement lessons. Floral arranging requires a lot of energy.
